Melissa chose her dress carefully, comparing the slub silk to the textured prettiness of lace to the slinkiness of jersey. All three were in navy blue, her favourite colour. Lace won the day — classy but unassuming.

Applying makeup was second nature. She didn’t need a mirror to dab her face with powder and bold her lips with russet.
